What we are researching and why it matters

Research in progress

Hempsphere’s research interests connect African plant resources with practical materials and commercial applications. We want to understand where an idea can become a useful product—and where more evidence is needed.

Start with the application

A plant resource becomes commercially useful when someone can use it reliably. That means understanding material properties, processing needs, supply consistency and the requirements of the intended customer.

Our interests include cannabis, industrial hemp, kenaf and natural-material systems. They span cultivar evaluation, fibre and core applications, processing-system specification and prototype development. These are connected questions rather than a promise to manufacture every possible product.

Fibre crops in African conditions

Variety names and overseas results are starting points. Local suitability depends on conditions and intended output. Field evaluation should connect crop performance with the quality of the material ultimately offered to a buyer.

Hempsphere operates a South African cultivar test site. Our evaluation priorities include drought tolerance, disease resistance, yield and quality, fibre and seed suitability, and cannabinoid profiles where legally permitted. We will publish measured results only when there is a documented basis for doing so.

A successful trial should make the next decision clearer, including when a variety, site or intended product is unsuitable. Reporting limits is part of useful research.

Processing and prototype development

Harvested material often needs preparation before it can serve a manufacturer. Processing choices influence contamination, moisture, consistency and usable recovery. We are interested in systems that connect local feedstock with a clear specification and maintainable equipment.

The proposed hemp bioremediation brick is one prototype direction. It combines plant material with mycelium, biochar and microbial activity as a concept for investigation. Its treatment effectiveness and physical performance are not yet established.

Prototypes help make a question tangible. They are not automatically products, and attractive diagrams cannot substitute for test results. We identify the development stage when discussing them.

Working with specialist knowledge

Research benefits from critical review and appropriate testing capability. Hempsphere engages with university researchers, including at UJ and UCT. Specific activities and institutional roles will be described publicly once confirmed and cleared for publication.

A discussion with a researcher, participation in a university event and a formal institutional agreement are different relationships. University names do not imply endorsement of Hempsphere products. We will present each activity on its own evidence.

How research connects to the shop

The shop supports access to materials, equipment and related services. Research can help refine specifications, identify useful sample formats and reveal what customers need to evaluate before purchasing at scale.

That connection also requires commercial discipline. An untested prototype remains outside the product catalogue. Supplier availability must be confirmed, and demonstration pricing must be replaced with a confirmed quotation before a purchase commitment.

The goal is a clearer route from inquiry to suitable material, rather than using research language as a substitute for product documentation.

What visitors can expect

Knowledge provides enduring explanations and practical questions. News records dated developments. Research & Development shows project interests and current status. Product pages describe the commercial offer and its supply conditions.

As work progresses, useful updates may include documented trials, material characterisation, prototype assessments and clearly described collaborations. We will distinguish our own measurements from published references and explain important limitations.

Researchers, manufacturers and potential project partners are welcome to bring a defined question, application or testing capability. A clear brief helps establish whether there is a useful next step together.
