Research & Development

Research in progress

Concept illustration of a composite brick combining hemp hurds, mycelium, biochar and microbial activity.
Concept illustration supplied by Hempsphere. Proposed structure and mechanisms; not microscopy or measured treatment performance. Glowing elements are illustrative.

Research with a practical destination. We explore how African plant resources can become useful materials, supported by evidence, appropriate processing and a clear application.

Hemp bioremediation brick

Prototype in development — not for sale. A proposed composite of hemp hurds, mycelium, biochar and microbial activity. We are investigating whether a modular format could support selected contaminated-soil treatment applications.

The next questions are measurable: which contaminants, which conditions, what performance, and how the material is recovered or managed after use? Durability, treatment effectiveness and environmental benefit are research objectives rather than established product claims.

Fibre crops and cultivar evaluation

Our interests include hemp and kenaf, variety evaluation for African conditions, fibre and core quality, and the relationship between growing, processing and end use. Published yield figures guide questions; they do not substitute for local trials.

Hempsphere operates a South African cultivar test site at -25.892167748451268, 28.0244283191344. Evaluation priorities include drought tolerance, disease resistance, yield, fibre and seed suitability, and cannabinoid profiles where legally permitted. No trial dataset or validated performance results are published here yet.

From stalk to useful material

Processing-system specification starts with the buyer’s required output. We explore feedstock preparation, fibre separation, drying, grading and material handling, alongside the practical requirements for equipment procurement and local value addition.

Academic engagement

We value engagement with researchers and universities, including UJ and UCT. Specific projects, institutional roles and formal partnership descriptions will be shared when confirmed and cleared for publication. University names here do not imply endorsement of a product or a formal institutional agreement.

River repair and accountable monitoring

Our research interests connect natural-material treatment concepts with source control, baseline measurements, laboratory evidence and responsible biomass management. Sensors and laboratory tests answer different questions. Any intervention must account for maintenance and the destination of contaminants and harvested material.

Read the river-repair and monitoring guide. This is a research framework, not an announcement of an awarded programme or signed institutional agreement.

How we report progress

Concepts, prototypes, trials and commercial products are different stages. We identify the stage of each project and distinguish an illustration from test evidence. Research milestones will be reported in News; practical background belongs in Knowledge.
